Valuable
volunteer activities
Volunteers are currently needed for a wide range of activities,
with specific priorities being:
 | Fundraising
both in their countries of origin and also in
Cambodia
|
 | Visiting
the village to assist the teachers;
|
-
with professional advice on improving their teaching skills,
-
with enjoyable activities for the children that will assist in their
learning, incorporating English language learning for children, and
practical life skills learning for adult literacy students.
Thus
both professional teachers and simply those who are happy to share their
knowledge of English and/or of relevant activities are all welcome.
 | Assistance
with other tasks, such as sourcing suitable reading materials for
the reading room, or helping to organize materials and lending
systems in it.
|
 | Assisting
in consulting with villagers about their needs and hopes, with a
format in place for consulting with children.
|
 | Assisting
with practical tasks that arise, such as purchase of supplies for
maintenance of the Education Centre for example.
|
As a volunteer, you are part of the Helping Hands team, and so we always
welcome hearing ideas about projects for the village.
However, any new projects have to be in line with VILLAGERS’
priorities.
Activities
we tend not to do:
We tend to avoid
some “hands on” activities. This relates to
villagers taking on major roles in projects wherever they have, or can
easily get, the skills and resources to do so.
This is all about:
 | Building
ownership and community pride, and ensuring better valuing and
upkeep of projects once they are completed.
|
 | Building
skills and confidence, and so enabling more to be done with less
external support.
|
 | Giving
people more control over their lives, so that they feel empowered
rather than feeling they are receiving charity.
|
For example, the village itself has many "people" resources
for building projects. They
have gained even greater knowledge and pride from involvement in such
Helping Hands building projects to date.
For instance, the school was built by them with outside funding
but only a little outside guidance in the building stage.
It is "their project", and they still continue to make
improvements week by week.
